Analytics

Aggregate counts, no cookies.

Visits to this site are counted using Cloudflare Web Analytics. It records the page you landed on, the site that referred you if there was one, your country, your browser and operating system, and roughly how long the page took to load.

It sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and does not build a profile or follow you to other websites. There is no way for me to identify an individual visitor from it. What I see is a number of visits per page, and which trails people are reading about.

Server logs

Standard delivery records.

The site is served by GitHub Pages through Cloudflare. Both keep short-lived technical logs of requests, which include IP addresses, as every web server does. These exist to deliver pages and to block abuse. I do not access them for any other purpose, and I do not combine them with anything else.

Embedded video

YouTube is a third party.

Videos on this site are embedded from YouTube using its privacy-enhanced host, which means Google sets no tracking cookie until you actually press play. Once you do, you are interacting with Google and its own data practices apply, exactly as if you had opened the video on YouTube directly.

If you would rather not, the video does not load anything from Google until you click it. Google's policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.

Affiliate links

Retailers track their own clicks.

Some links on the gear page may earn a commission. Clicking one takes you to the retailer's own site, where that retailer and its affiliate network set cookies to attribute the visit. That happens on their domain under their policies, not here, and I receive only aggregate reporting — that a sale occurred and what commission it earned. I never see who you are or what else you bought.

Email

What happens when you write.

Mail to hello@wholetrail.com is forwarded by Cloudflare Email Routing into a personal inbox. Your message and address sit there until I delete them. I do not add correspondents to any list.

The newsletter signup is not yet connected to a mailing provider. When it is, this section will name the provider and what it stores. Nothing is being collected through it in the meantime.

  This site is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect anything from them.

Your rights

Asking about your data.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to personal information about you, ask for it to be deleted, or object to its use. Because this site holds almost nothing — no accounts, no cookies, no identifiers — there is usually nothing to retrieve. If you have sent me email, write to hello@wholetrail.com and I will delete the correspondence on request.

Changes

When this page changes.

If what I collect changes — a newsletter provider, affiliate links going live, anything new — this page gets updated before that happens, and the date below changes with it.
